Solo RPG Project 2026: Scene 3

Gossamer began the unpleasant task of recovering the daggers he had thrown during the fight against the zombies. He pulled two blood and slime covered blades from one of the rotting corpses, then went looking through the weeds and tall grass for the dagger that had missed its target.

Oracle Roll: Does Gossamer find something else when looking for his missing dagger? Rated Somewhat Likely.

Result of Oracle = 46, the answer is YES, Gossamer does find something else when looking for his missing dagger.

To determine what is found, roll 1d6 on the modified Random Room Generator Table:

1-2 = Treasure 3-4 = Monster 5 = Special (*) 6 = Trap

Result of Generator = 3, Gossamer uncovers a monster!

He finds a small mound of freshly upturned soil and kneels down to look closer, digging in the patch of damp earth to uncover whatever has been buried. He lets out a shriek and recoils backwards as a skull rises from the soil, teeth chattering, and hovering in the air, it rushes toward the frightened Magic User and prepares to bite.

There is a chance that Gossamer is Surprised by the Flying Skull. Gossamer is surprised on a result of 1 or 2 on a 1d6. Die roll = 4, Gossamer is not surprised. Combat begins as normal.

Begin combat procedures to resolve the standoff.

Step 1: Declare Spells and Melee Movement

No spells, Gossamer wants to retreat from melee using a Fighting Withdrawal.

Step 2: Initiative (Each side rolls 1d6)

Gossamer rolls a 4, Flying Skull rolls a 1, the adventurers go first.

Step 3: Winning Side Acts

Movement: Using the Basic Encumbrance rules, the four adventurers movement rates are:

Gossamer (Fighting Withdrawal): 20 ft. Gunderson (Heavy Armor): 20 ft. Thatcher (Heavy Armor): 20 ft. Edmur (Light Armor): 30 ft.

Gossamer makes a fighting withdrawal from melee range as Gunderson and Thatcher charge in and prepare melee attacks, Edmur stays back and makes a missile attack with his sling.

Missile Attacks: Edmur hurls a sling stone at the Flying Skull. --15 ft. range means the attack is at short range, +1 to attack roll. Edmur rolls an 18+1=19 Attack roll, a hit for 2 damage!

Melee Attacks: Gossamer's fighting withdrawal with his Dagger. Due to his low STR, Gossamer has a -1 to attack and damage. Rolls a 19-1=18 Attack roll, a hit for 3 damage, slaying the creature before the others can even draw their weapons and strike.

The Flying Skull shatters, the bone shards are scattered amongst the ruins. Gunderson the Dwarf and Thatcher the Cleric look at the cracked skull, then back at the trembling wizard with his humble dagger, then look at each other and burst into laughter.

"Looks like you should be protecting us!" Gunderson snorts slapping Gossamer on the back playfully.

With the threat gone, Gossamer carefully searches the area and is able to recover his lost dagger.

Edmur points toward the main ruins and says grimly, "About time we figure out what's burning in there, you reckon?"

The others nod and they begin walking forward toward the temple's main entrance.
